Mayor Mark Eckert has been in office for 11 years and in the city government of Belleville for 20 years. He has heard from many military families who have moved to the Scott AFB area that Belleville is a well kept secret. It is the largest city south of Springfield Il and is the county seat. Belleville has three historic districts, a walkable downtown area, Lindenwood University, Southwestern Illinois College and many cultural activities. The annual “Art on the Square” is considered the best in the country. There are several school districts and two high schools, one of which is ranked as one of the best in the state, parochial schools and a private school .
This city has a real sense of community and the Belleville Scott Committee is the oldest continuous military civilian connection in the country at 66 years old. The city has always had a strong connection with Scott Air Force Base and has many activities that help out families with deployed members. The military families enjoy the many festivals and many volunteer to help out and to make them a success. The mayor has a son who has been deployed and says that he now has an even greater understanding of what it is like to have a family member serving in the military.
If you are PCS’ing into Scott AFB consider Belleville Il as a great place to put down roots. It has a lot to offer and welcomes military families.
